NORWAY ID CARD NUMBER

A Norway ID Card number is an ID number for you who have a residence permit and are going to live in Norway for more than six months. You need it when you are in touch with different Norwegian  authorities.

WHAT DO YOU NEED YOUR NORWAY ID CARD NUMBER FOR?
You need your Norway ID Card number for example to open a bank account, to get a regular GP (fastlege), to rent a place to live, to pay your taxes and to be able to vote at elections.

AID Card number is an eleven digit ID number, and the last five digits are called a “personal number”.

WHEN DO YOU GET A NORWAY ID CARD NUMBER?
If you have been granted a residence permit in Norway, you will receive your NorwayID number in a letter from the Tax Administration about two to six weeks after you have met with the police to order your residence card.
If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country, you will receive your Norway ID Card number from the Tax Administration when you meet there after you have registered with the police. See information about moving to Norway at the Tax Administration (external website).
HAVE YOU GOT A ID CARD NUMBER, BUT ARE YOU STILL REGISTERED AS MOVED FROM NORWAY IN THE NATIONAL REGISTRY?
There may be several reasons why you have been registrered as moved from Norway in the National Registry.

If you are registered as moved from Norway because your residence permit is no longer valid and you have a new application that is being processed now, you may ask the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (the UDI) to notify the Norwegian Tax Administration, so that they may re-register you into the National Registry. This may only happen if the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration believes you were legally in Norway when you were registered as moved from Norway.

If there are other reasons why you are not registered in the National Registry any more, you need to contact your local Norwegian Tax office. (external website)

YOUR NATIONAL IDENTITY NUMBER AND BIRTH DATE ARE NOT THE SAME
Your Norway ID Card number is not necessarily the same as your birth date. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration does not change your birth date when it’s not the same as your national identity number.

DO YOU HAVE A D NUMBER?
A D number is a temporary identification number that you get if you have applied for protection (asylum), or if you have a residence permit and are going to stay in Norway for less than six months.

WHAT IS A DUF NUMBER?
Everyone who applies for protection (asylum) or for a residence permit in Norway will be assigned a DUF number. The DUF number is your registration number in the computer system of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (the UDI).
